If you’ve ever visited our store, high chances are you would have had the pleasure of meeting Bronwyn (or, as she’s also affectionately known, Bron) – one of the most kind, passionate, and stupendously well-read booksellers a store like us could hope to have.

This month, Bron marks fifteen years as a bookseller – a huge milestone! She’s been with us since Roaring Stories’ former life as Bray’s Books, and is truly at the heart of Balmain’s reading community. There must be hundreds by now who have benefited from her recommendations, and consequently had their inner worlds enriched (particularly if you’re a fan of historical fiction, her favourite genre!).

Congrats, Bron! You can read a little reflection on her time as a bookseller here, and see a photo of Bron in her early bookselling days below.

Naturally such a momentous number has had me reflecting on both my careers, first as an early childhood teacher and now as a bookseller for Brays Books and Roaring Stories. I feel so grateful to have had two such wonderful career paths that not only fed my passions but have given me the satisfaction of doing something that makes other people’s lives a little bit better.

My 18 years of teaching were full of stimulating ideas, enduring relationships, a strong sense of community & social engagement. It was also pretty stressful a lot of the time. Switching to a bookseller’s life has been much easier on my stress levels. Every day I get to talk about books, what we’re reading, what’s coming out soon and authors we adore with other people who also love talking about books. I love our bookish community, I love making decisions about the curation of our stock and being a part of the wider publishing industry and I love developing my bookseller superpower of recommending the right book at the right time!!

Thank you all for being a part of my journey. Thank you for your bookish friendships and all your wonderful book suggestions over the years – you’ve all made coming to work a pleasure and a joy.
