Balmain Peninsula Wall Calendar 2024 & In-store art exhibition

Exclusively available at Roaring Stories the Balmain Peninsula Wall Calendar for 2024 goes on sale this Saturday both instore and online. The calendar has been designed by Jan Larsen and features sketches of the Balmain community.

Jan Larsen is an artist living on the Balmain Peninsula. Jan normally uses acrylic paints for a wide range of images but during COVID she completed many local sketches with pen and watercolour which are beautifully featured in the Balmain Peninsula 2024 Calendar.

The in store art exhibition features a number of paintings by Jan that are also available for purchase. ‘These paintings are a selection of my works in acrylics on canvas.  Like all artists I am influenced by the works of other artists and have been lucky to have visited many art galleries around the world and different exhibitions in Australia.  I like observing what is around me and in this regard have been influenced by such artists as Jeffrey Smart and Edward Hopper and also Wendy Sharpe to name just three.  I like to take photos of what I see for inspiration but not to copy exactly.  I have been lucky to have had lots of support and guidance from my art teacher Brandt Lewis at the Willoughby Arts Centre’ Jan Larsen

Author Visits- Instore signings

Rebecca Gross – 11am

Rebecca will be joining us in store at 11am on Saturday for your chance to discuss all things interior and to sign copies of her latest book Ornament is Not a Crime. The distinctive visual language, bright colours and unexpected materials of the 80s postmodernists are making a comeback. After decades of minimalism, mid-century modern and Scandinavian design, a new wave of architects and designers are experimenting with shape, scale and symbolic references to add expression and meaning to interior and furniture design.

Rebecca L Gross is a Sydney-based writer who specialises in architecture, design and design history. She has a master’s degree in the history of decorative arts and design from Parsons School of Design in New York and is interested in studying cultural history through the lens of architecture, design and visual culture.

Simone Amelia Jordan- 12pm

We look forward to having Simone Amelia Jordan join us instore to sign copies of her book Tell her she’s dreamin’. A rallying call for anyone who dreams big. And a deeply personal story of family, culture and music from Australia’s most successful hip-hop journalist, a high-achieving Lebanese-Australian woman who refused to be limited by others.

Simone Amelia Jordan is Australia’s most successful hip-hop journalist. She has contributed to The Source, VIBE, Rolling Stone, ABC and SBS, and her celebrity interviews have notched over 13 million YouTube views. Simone founded and edited Australia’s highest-selling rap/R&B newsstand title, Urban Hitz magazine. In 2021, Simone won the Richell Prize for Emerging Writers. She mentors the next generation of multicultural talent through her work with Media Diversity Australia and Diversity Arts Australia, and is resolute about hip-hop’s power to change the world.
